9:30

this isn't working, is it? 2 months, two tours in foriegn countries and i never even bothered...
totally should have covered scotland. totally should have covered guadalajara. totally should have covered the mariee sioux show. moving on...

the 9:30 club in dc...

sometimes everything just goes right. so supremely absolutely right. like the great cosmic tetris has masterfully aligned....yesterday was one of those days. to the highest degree.

the 9:30 club....it's one of those legendary rooms you always here about. and you only ever hear good. always seemed like i'd done all the other big dc/baltimore rooms...yet this one remained firmly beyond my grasp. and suddenly, there we are. standing in the crow's nest above stage right eating pizza and watching load-in....

everything about this place....it's just designed to be easy. there's even bus parking right next to the gig (sadly so many northeast coast gigs this size can't claim such an honor). and the staff make it even easier. everyone so on the ball and professional about their work, and polite and considerate at the same time. every. single. person....it's like working inside a ball of cotton candy on the moon while wearing 10 sweaters....

and the show was excellent. and this tour is off to a great start. and all the folks in mates of state and sunbears (our tour brethren) are all completely awesome and lookin' to have a good time. this is gonna be a good month....thank you everyone at the 9:30, for everything. you made my day.

and well, let's get into mariee sioux.

mariee sioux is a youg talented singer songwriter from california...she plays the guitar and sings. really really really well. english doesn't really have the words to explain how beautiful this girl's voice is. its sugary sweet in that gut wrenching way...like eating that cotton candy, after your dog has died. totally gorgeous, and i use that word reluctantly....it's not right. it's something else.

i never really thought our paths would cross, i just kinda assumed our spheres of influence never really overlapped....and yet, last week....

mariee sioux played the holocene in portland (i ALWAYS see great shows here...beirut 3 years ago....). i had no idea. totally missed the blurb in the willamette. g said we were going bowling to celebrate the end of finals. turned out he had two tickets for us to the show. i was floored. g is the best ever.

and the show was awesome. mariee is touring with white magic, and dearest. i guess thurston moore really gets off on the girl in white magic; they were cool.

but mariee's set....i've never seen an audience more rapt. there were maybe 150 people there tops. and as soon as she took the stage, everyone just shut the fuck up. total silence. and listened. and listened hard. with their eyes closed. some hippie girls swayed a bit. she sang just as pitch-perfectly beautiful as she does on her album. no auto-tune, or effects. just a girl and her guitar. lyrics that make me bleed a little. in the best way there is.

mariee sioux has an album called "faces in the rocks". EVERYONE I HAVE EVER KNOWN SHOULD OWN THIS AND I DON'T CARE. opinions like kittens and i'm givin' 'em away.
